Inventus Power co-exhibited with David Schnur Associates at MD&M West 2020 in Anaheim, CA last month. This event brings together leaders in the medical design and manufacturing space to discuss the latest advancements in the healthcare industry. Check out our interview with Jeff Downs, Director of Business Development – Medical, to get a recap on this year’s MD&M West conference.

Why is MD&M West an important exhibiting event for Inventus Power?

Jeff:  For years, Inventus Power has been designing and manufacturing advanced battery systems for medical devices and are frequent MD&M West exhibitors. We are committed to servicing the Medical Market and attending this large industry conference enables us to network with key customers and suppliers and learn how we can support new applications that require portable power. From our standard U1 batteries to our custom, device-optimized power solutions for Class I, II and III applications, we are always eager to talk with medtech engineers to determine how Inventus Power can help meet their specific power demands.

What were the main industry topics people were talking about?

Jeff:  This year’s conference focused on emerging technologies in wearable medical products, smart devices, product development innovations, quality improvement techniques, and regulatory updates. OEMs who visited our booth were very interested in discussing battery safety and the importance of choosing the right partner with experience designing power solutions for medical devices.

What products were on display?

Jeff:  At our booth, we displayed samples that highlighted our broad range of battery, charger, and power supply capabilities. We design and manufacture products that work with applications such as sleep therapy devices, portable oxygen concentrators, pain management devices, surgical tools, heart pumps, and more.

On display were custom batteries and standard products such as our U1Life batteries, which are a highly reliable, long-life solution for medical carts and patient monitors. We also featured our new U1-PWR modular batteries, a safe and dependable lead-acid replacement solution for portable x-ray machines, e-mobility / electric wheelchairs, and more. These U1-PWR batteries can be put in series and parallel to create the right power solution for products that require greater power and capacity.

What technology trends, specifically in power solutions, are taking place within the medical industry?

Jeff:  Robotic surgical devices and portable x-ray are hot topics. Traditionally, these ran on AC and lead-acid batteries and are now converting to Li-ion for to satisfy the greater power and longer run time requirements. I foresee that the higher incidences of chronic diseases and sickness will continue to drive development and demand for smart batteries in the home care device market.

Why should industry OEMs consider partnering with Inventus Power to design and manufacture the battery-powered system for their medical device?

Jeff:  It starts with our Patient Priority culture. Inventus Power employees are empowered to be accountable and always keep the patient in mind with every product we make. We know that each medical device must be carefully engineered – perform exceptionally, adhere to industry requirements and regulations, and meet all expectations for quality, reliability, and safety.

Through our 60 years of experience, we have gained the knowledge and expertise that is needed to design and manufacture safe and reliable battery and power solutions. Plus, our global footprint and vertically integrated engineering, manufacturing and testing capabilities allow us to deliver products at an exceptional speed to market.
